Thanks to Fujifilm USA for offering to lend me the X100 VI for two weeks. They're great folks over there! So, I had this entire idea for this video. The original title was "Will a new shiny camera motivate you to shoot?" It was a little bit of a personal experiment (I have not been motivated to shoot lately) and also a bit of an obvious mockery (obviously NO...the camera will not motivate you)....

Hey @omar, love the vids! I'm heading off to Morocco for some gorgeous photography walks through medinas.... is my 24-70 and 50mm prime gonna be enough for me, or do I splurge on the 14-30? What's the no-brainer here? thanks in advance!
Hi Omar, Do you have a vidéo or anything showing your setup for your Desktop Top Shot. I don't have a lot of space.... do you use a C-Stand ? Thanks. P.S: Love your content, and this Nikon Zf 🫠...
Hey Omar. Watched a few of your great videos and subscribed! Thank you for your work! Question; I currently have the z6 and am torn between the z6iii and thr zf. I shoot small events, street portraits, and boudoir. All part-time. What would you recommend as a additional body?
How do you find it works in burst mode? I’m trying to get some stop motion photos done but not sure if it will lock or track if people are dancing. This will be in lowlight as a club photographer. However, I’ll be using continuous light which I hope to help the focus mode
Hey Omar, this is not related to the video, but i would like to know, what lenses would you recommend to take photos of figurines? Like hot toys or smaller. Thanks! Edit: maybe somewhat related 😂
Thank you for this hack!
Finagle
I recommend the 26mm 2.8 Z-it is very sharp and contrasty and very compact. It is superb and suited to the zf! An aperture Ring would be nice but it is too small for that.
Hey, thanks, great review you went over all the points I needed to know and in an engaging way. I don’t own the Zf yet only the small rig grip in preparation for its arrival in the coming weeks as I’m upgrading from a D500. Thanks again, I’m subscribed.
so the lenses are made of plastic, not glass?
Seems like mentally Ill world😂
I just switched from Fuji to a Z8 and am shocked how bad the AWB is! You’re 100% right that it’s too cold and feels clinical!
All AWB is like that, even Fuji. It’s finding the true white point.
My street and travel kit is the Zf, 26mm f/2.8, 40mm f/2, and 70-180mm f/2.8. The 1.4x TC goes in the bag as well. There isn’t much you can’t shoot with it, and it all fits nicely into a medium size shoulder bag. These lenses make it possible to enjoy the performance of full frame in a kit only marginally bigger and heavier than many APS-C setups.
Thanks for the insights!
I thought it would be nice if the recipes could be switched using the lever under the dial.
I recently bought a D780 so that I can muck about with characterful and cheap AF-D lenses.
Strictly for Photography and on a tight budget, would you recommend the Zf, Z6ii or Z6iii with priority to portraits in low light (ISO, autofocus, etc.)?
Wonderful. That is one heck of a parade. Great video Omar.
YT only just suggested this in 2024 ? In the motorbike picture I would take a few minutes and clone the red pole out of the picture.
Hmm, you didn't bring your XT20+23/f2 and give us a SOOC shootout?
Question for Omar or anyone who has used this camera: When you're shooting with it, do you use the command dials or do you use the analog-style controls on top of the camera? I'm just curious about whether it's ergonomic/efficient to use the analog dials or they are mostly there for show. Thanks!
When i’m using my ZF for events, I don’t use the dials on top. For me it’s faster to change my exposure when I use the front and back dials. But for slower, personal work I use them alot.
@@michelemicoli Thank you!
Thank you so much! Though this video is 5 years old, it is the FIRST INFORMATION I was able to find about how to achieve what I called, on my film camera, "Full Aperture Metering." On the Fuji camera, it means turning "Preview Exp. and WB Off" when in manual mode. I did endless google searching trying to find how to do this. I knew there had to be some way to achieve this, but could not find it alone. Again, many thanks. You have made my day.
Omar, did you mention your aperture for most of these? I may have missed it. Great video!
John branch shoots Fuji for weddings
Fuji’s AF would never keep up with all those people’s walking
I just switched to the zf from fuji and i gotta say the 40mm f2 has made me happy. I dont even regret losing my legendary original 35mm 1.4 fujinon.
I love this Omar because I am an official photographer for a funky marching band that dresses in costumes like those, so appreciated your perspective. I usually shoot with my X-H2S for those events but…..I have the Zf and the 40mm and love it … have been wanting a wider, cheaper option for street during the day. Thanks and love all the shots!
The Zf + 40mm f/2 is my compact travel rig - it did a great job on a 10 day trip to Vietnam. Like an X100VI but with interchangeable lens versatility.
40/2 is good because making a good double gauss/planar lens in 2024 is trivial even for almost no money. I dont really dig the tele zoom shots but that's probably more to do with my preferences re compression. I have a few S lenses for the Z system but most of the time I stuff the 28 and 40 with the zf into a tiny, tiny A&A bag and just dont bother with anything heavier. Or I take a Leica, but that's not always what Im in the mood for or what the situation calls for.
I saw some guy in the Nikon Zf group on Facebook who replaced the plastic mount of the 40/2 with a metal mount! The plastic mount hasn't bothered me at all, but it's a pretty simple mod if that's important to you!
Which af mode and settings did you use? Thx
Aperture priority. Auto iso. Center custom point with face/eye on

Ahh the shorty forty only 6 elements that creates good sharpness lower element counts lend to nice micro contrast this lens definitely has a character to it thats hard to explain
Would like to see other compact f2 lenses from Nikon like 60 or 90 f2 :=)
I bought the SE version 40f2 , looks so stylish on the ZF. Just wished they'd upcale the build quality a bit for the SE, bought it mainly for it looks but it suprised me how good it is and so small
Rumor says that 70-180/2.8 is made by Tamron. I use Tamron 24-70/2.8 G2, 70-200/2.8 G2, and 150-600 G2 on D850 and with FTZ II on Zf, and they have been great. I use 24-70/2.8 more than Z mount 24-120/4 S. I recently got an electronic adapter from F to GFX mount, and surprisingly all of them work on my GFX 50S now. At some focal ranges, there are black corners that cannot be recovered in post which is understandable, but the usable area is still bigger than full frame sensor size.
One of the details I don't see discussed much is that the distance from a person's face is something we have an instinctive sense for. We know how to see proximity distortion--when people's noses get bigger and ears get smaller, it feels like we're leaning in very close. A 35mm portrait with a face mostly filling the frame feels intimate, and if the subject seems reserved or uncomfortable it immediately feels like you're invading their space. It's easier to make people look cool in 85mm portraits not just because it's easier for subjects to be comfortable, but because, on some level, the viewer will *feel* how distant the photographer is. It's an aspect of your party photography that's always impressed me--not just that you're able to you're able to shoot people looking excited and unselfconscious, but because you're able to get that when you were very clearly within a couple of feet away. Looking at these photos, they feel comfortable and unreserved with a viewer who is up close.
Interesting you included the 70-180 as a 'cheap' lens. Owning one, it is great but I would not consider it cheap $1200+ and it is a bit heavy compared to the others you showed. Fun video though with a lot of characters.
I said this in the video. Ugh
Did you use the wide adapter for the osmo pocket 3?
No. reg.
The look of those images!!!! 🥰🙌
I love Nikons fantastic plastic lenses. I shot a wedding with the 28mm and 40mm SE lenses. I love the rendering, vintage highlights but modern sharpness.
I kind of like the softness from the 24-50, personally. Especially when you throw a 'film simulation' on it in Lightroom or something and add a little grain, it sort of gives that really soft, filmic look. Great stuff as always, Omar!
@Omar Do you have access to a 3D printer? I just designed/made a lens that mounts a disposable camera lens to Z-Mount cameras. I made it for my wife, and she's been using it for everyday use. It's simple because you don't have aperture control and don't need to focus, so it's easy for everyone to use. Seeing the disposable camera "look" in our photos is also so cool. Our 2.5-year-old niece was using it the other day (with hands close by to catch the camera) and she loved it. If you want to 3D print it, I can send you the files and you can make one yourself. I think it'd be a great addition to the Zf!
I agree the colors are on the cooler side. I've been trying to figure out how to get better jpgs out of camera and I think I'm pretty close to what I want. I use rich tone portrait with slight sharpening tweaks. Portrait impression balance with +2 brightness and around +1 magenta. Then I set the white balance pretty high. Around between 6k -9k depending on the scene. Hope that helps!
That was fun 😊
beautiful image
dude Z63 is not the Z6 we all know anymore, it becomes a assistant kinda like for Z8 and Z9 when u need 2-3 camera set for events video. All I want from a Z63 is same body and weight, E7 chip, fast AF, 33mp sensor. Thats all I want but no, they invested heavily on Video and I dont need ANYTHING from that. Now Im pretty desperate, as I know the Z73 gonna have too much MP and cost way too much and Z52 gonna have at most 24.5 MP sensor. Dunno what to do now, guess Ill keep using my old Z6 till Z6IV...
I've shot tons of weddings with the plastic 40. Great lens!
Haha! Lots of great characters there! My fave was the sardines in a can! I think the Nikon 40 f2 is a real banger. I have the SE edition and it complements the camera so well. Looking to pair it with a 28mm and maybe the 135 or a longer zoom. Good video!
man I miss these countries that u can actually take photo on people and not getting legal trouble. EU is too strick on this imo, killed street photography. How can I get a consent for street photography, thats totally against the idea of capture the natuaral human behaviour...
